Habitat Harbour Recherche, Fotografie und Buchgestaltung über die polnische Hafenkultur in Gdansk, Gdynia und Sopot.
The culture of harbour between appearance and reality: The subject of the work “On the Reeperbahn nights half past one…”, that‘s how Hans Albers sang in 1954 about Hamburg - harbour city with many eerie attractions, today, just like 50 years ago. The multiplicity of attractions in cities like Gdansk or Hamburg, in a magic way draw attention of people. Old Hansa city, Gdansk with its noble harbour sites like: shipyard, the rise of ‚Solidarnosc‘, are the relics of ancient times. These industrial harbours, rotten border control stations. Toghether with adjoined cities: Gdynia, Sopot, they lead partnership roles. The cities offered many presocialistsail clubs which woke in people emotions of nostalgia, melancholy and wistfulness. St.Pauli, Landungsbrücken create in our minds the picture of romantic harbour city. Every morning, at fife, at the ‚Fischmarkt‘ sellers try to tempt tourists to buy bananas, plants, noodles in big packages. Old Blohm & Voss docks with their long wide and scratched inscriptions attract everyone‘s attention. In the 80 the ‚New Savage‘ (Neue Wilde) fusion emerged with artists like Albert and Markus Oelen, Martin Kippenberger or Werner Büttner. Later on, the painters work was displaced by Minimal and Concept Art. There is the same trend of subjective order in art until today. These proportions of old, easy, wrecked, dirty seem to calm down, to soften and heal our minds in these days. Places of globalization like: clubs, bars, ect. attract us by the looks of the interiors. The more eerie they look the more they draw our attention and appeal to us.The subject of my work comes from the philosophy of Karl Rosenkranz, who defined the ‚Aesthetics of Ugliness‘‚Rosenkranz says that hideousness is in ‚between of the beauty and queer‘. “We can‘t build only ugliness without”adding to it comic, says Rosenkranz That is what he says ‚ adding shine into ugliness‘. Art without this contradiction is not possible. The communication target aims and the subject of my diploma is extensive, graphic analysis and reflextion of ‚Aesthetic of ugliness‘, based on the harbour culture of Gdansk and Hamburg. What makes these places so attractive? What kind of meaning has a romantic sailor nowadays? What is the character type of a person who is placed in this hermetic environment? What has changed in industry throughout the years and how much is the romantic site visible? Graphic images should be presented in a book form, where pictures, graphs, researches, drafts and modelswill be placed. All of these will be a support to my inquiry. Book is the best form to join text and graphics. I want to present an obvious statement, to link visual graphic part with plain theory. My work is addressed to curious people who just like me seek for culture-theoretical subjects. The Motivation was my longing for old followed me from my youngest years. I started sailing with my parents ‚on the waves of Warsaw Pact‘, just when I was few years old. Later on, when I sailed alone and during my military service, I became fascinated by the view of old and wreced ships, yachts, docks and the workers of the harbours. Going on with my diploma I see a great chance that my longing & challenge will give me strenght in the future to become a good communication designer and will help me to create new forms of what‘s been once introduced. The practical implementation and handling with the theme. I createed an pratical implements. Studying visual communication as main pathway anddue to the fact that a book is the best medium that links the visual with the text, I decided to design full coloured issue. When dealing with feelings and emotions it is important to work also with photos. The book format should be at least in the closed format 300x200mm. I would like to focus on the photostyle, ‚New Dispassion‘ (Neue Sachlichkeit),which photographers like Bernd & Hilla Becher, Thomas Ruff or Andreas Gursky use in their work. Graphics should combine photoworld and be in the same cool and dispassion style. The main text (copy) should be an serif font which stands in contrast to the ‚lead in, headlines, subline‘ using a condensed font system. In all the text arrangement will be multiferious and deep like the whole work.
